Zdeblick, Ph.D. Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer Larry Arne Director, Electronics Larry Arne is Director of Electronics. Prior to joining Proteus, Mr. Arne was a manager at Neoguide Systems, where he led the development of electronics and software for a robotic endoscopy system, which received 510(k) approval by the FDA. Previously, Mr. Arne held management and engineering roles at Endovasix, a developer of a laser-based treatment for stroke. Mr. Arne was a co-founder and lead engineer at Mass Assessment Systems and at Sonic Force, both of which developed ultrasonic instrumentation for industrial markets. Mr. Arne holds a B.S. in computer science and engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. ^Top Joy Berberich Director, Finance & Administration Joy Berberich is Director of Finance and Administration. Prior to joining Proteus, Ms. Berberich provided financial and operational consulting services to start-up companies. Previously, she held multiple management positions in finance with Medtronic, including director of finance and controller for the diabetes division and director of finance for the neuromodulation, spinal, and ENT surgery business in Europe. Ms. Berberich also held finance management positions in the cardiovascular and cardiac rhythm disease management businesses of Medtronic. Ms. Berberich started her career with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and is a certified public accountant (inactive status). Ms. Berberich holds a B.S. in Finance and Accounting from California State University and an M.B.A. with distinction from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. ^Top Ben Costello, Ph.D. Vice President, Sensor Development Ben Costello is Vice President of Sensor Development. Prior to joining Proteus, Dr. Costello was the director of microtechnology at DiCon Fiberoptics, where he developed the world’s best-selling fiberoptic MEMS product. From 1993 to 1999, Dr. Costello was the president and co-founder of Berkeley MicroInstruments where he developed MEMS-based measurement instruments for the semiconductor equipment industry. Dr. Costello holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the joint University of California, Berkeley/University of California, San Francisco Bioengineering Program. ^Top Mauro Folean Director, Advanced Manufacturing Mauro Folena is Director of Advanced Manufacturing. Prior to joining Proteus, Mr. Folena was director of operations for Coherent Inc., a worldwide leader in photonics, where he led a team of 350 employees servicing four large business units. Prior to Coherent he served as vice president of operations for Aerogen, during which time the company was acquired by Nektar Therapeutics. Previously he served four years as director of operations leading a multi-site pressure sensor manufacturing operation, originally owned by Invensys, which was acquired by Honeywell International. For two decades he was with National Semiconductor in the field of equipment engineering and development of high volume manufacturing operations. He holds a Bachelor degree in Information Systems Management from the University of San Francisco and a certification in Total Productive Maintenance (T.P.M.) from the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance. Mr. Folena is an expert in the field of Lean Manufacturing and applying Six Sigma Methodologies. ^Top Erika Karplus Vice President, Business Development, Pharmaceutical Systems Erika Karplus is Vice President, Business Development, Pharmaceutical Systems. Prior to joining Proteus, Ms. Karplus worked as a consultant for venture capital firm Canaan Partners, focusing on strategic business planning and market analysis for early stage biopharmaceutical, medical products, and diagnostics companies. She served as vice president of marketing and strategic Planning at CytoTherapeutics, Inc., a neurology-focused cell and gene therapy company. For eight years Ms. Karplus was a principal in the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Group of the management consulting firm Booz, Allen & Hamilton. She holds an MBA from the Wharton School, an MSE from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in physics from Yale. ^Top Greg Moon, M.D. Director, Clinical Affairs and Decision Support Greg Moon is Director of Clinical Affairs and Decision Support. Prior to joining Proteus, Dr. Moon worked as a board-certified inpatient internal medicine provider for six years. Previously, he worked as a clinical specialist at SKOLAR, Inc., an online medical reference and continuing education provider. Dr. Moon holds an M.D. and a B.S. in biology from Stanford University, where he completed his residency and also served as chief resident. He is currently completing his MBA studies at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. ^Top David O'Reilly Senior Vice President, Corporate Development David O’Reilly is Senior Vice President, Corporate Development. Prior to joining Proteus, he was president of Catalyst Biosciences, a company developing novel therapeutic protein products based on engineered proteases. Mr. O’Reilly was chief business officer and part of the founding management team at Iconix Biosciences, a leading chemogenomics company. Prior to Iconix, Mr. O’Reilly was an executive at ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he was responsible for partnerships and licenses with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic organizations. He also managed the strategic development of ARIAD’s gene therapy subsidiary, ARIAD Gene Therapeutics, Inc. Mr. O’Reilly is a graduate of Wesleyan University, where he was named the school’s Gilbert H. Clee Scholar, and Harvard Business School, where he received an MBA with Distinction. ^Top Timothy L. Robertson, Ph.D. Director, Sensor Development Tim Robertson is Director of Sensor Development. Prior to joining Proteus, Dr. Robertson was founder and president of IOI Quantum Computing, which supplied key technologies for tunable lasers to clients in the telecommunications industry, including New Focus and Intel. Previously, he was director of hardware development at Siros Technologies, and the first employee of Real Time Geometry, a computer graphics start-up acquired by MetaTools. Dr. Robertson has diverse academic interests, including experimental cosmology, holographic data storage, and quantum computing. He holds an A.B. with honors in physics from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in condensed matter physics. ^Top George M. Savage, M.D. Co-Founder, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Savage is a co-founder of Proteus. He is also a Managing Member of Spring Ridge Ventures. From 1994-1999, Dr. Savage co-founded FemRx and served as a director and senior vice president of research and development during which time FemRx completed an IPO and was subsequently acquired by Johnson & Johnson. Previously, Dr. Savage co-founded CardioRhythm and served as a director and vice president of clinical and regulatory affairs during which time CardioRhythm was acquired by Medtronic. He practiced medicine from 1985 to 1992, specializing in trauma and emergency medicine. Dr. Savage holds a B.S. (Magna Cum Laude, Tau Beta Pi) in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, an M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed postgraduate training in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has an M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business. ^Top Angela Strand Senior Director, Marketing Angela Strand is Senior Director of Marketing for Proteus. Prior to joining Proteus, Ms. Strand served as vice president of marketing and sales for Aerogen, during which time the company was acquired by Nektar Therapeutics. Previously, Ms. Strand served as vice president of marketing for Novacept, a women's healthcare company acquired by Cytyc, and held leadership positions in marketing, sales and business development with Baxter Healthcare and FemRx, a women's healthcare company acquired by Johnson & Johnson. Ms. Strand holds a B.S. with high honors in Communications from the University of Tennessee and an M.B.A. with distinction from the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Business. ^Top Elisabeth Sussex Intellectual Property Counsel Elisabeth Sussex is Intellectual Property Counsel for Proteus. Prior to joining Proteus, she provided intellectual property services for multinational and Fortune 100 corporations. She specializes in technology areas including computer hardware and software systems, networking systems, microchip technology, Internet infrastructure technology, telecommunications, optical device technology, and mechanical-electrical applications. In addition, Ms. Sussex has more than a decade of experience as a computer scientist, including managing a global platform comprising 6,300 remote systems. Ms. Sussex holds B.S. in Computer Science, cum laude, from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan and a J.D. from Wayne State Law School, Detroit, Michigan. Ms. Sussex is admitted to the U.S. Patent Bar, the State Bar of California, and the State Bar of Michigan. ^Top Andrew M. Thompson Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Thompson is a co-founder of Proteus. He is also a Managing Member of Spring Ridge Ventures, and has led the incubation of Proteus since inception. From 1994-1999, Mr. Thompson co-founded and served as a director and chief executive officer of FemRx until the company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson. Previously, Mr. Thompson co-founded and was chief financial officer for CardioRhythm through its acquisition by Medtronic. He holds an M.A. in engineering from Cambridge University, where he was a United Kingdom National Engineering Scholar, an M.A. in education from Stanford University and a M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business. ^Top Todd Thompson Vice President, Product Development Todd Thompson is Vice President of Product Development. Prior to joining Proteus, he contributed to a number of successful start-up companies including Origin Medsystems, FemRx, and Timi3 Systems. His R&D management experience spans numerous medical specialties including orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery and women’s health. As an early member of many R&D focused companies, Mr. Thompson has demonstrated expertise in developing novel technology in the fast paced start-up environment. He has built successful teams and managed innovative product development efforts in diverse clinical and technological areas. Mr. Thompson holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University and an M.B.A from Santa Clara University Graduate School of Business. ^Top Mark J. Zdeblick, Ph.D. Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer Dr. Zdeblick is a co-founder of Proteus. Prior to co-founding Proteus, he served as chief technology officer, Optical switch group of K2 Optronics. Dr. Zdeblick is founder, director and past chief technical officer of Redwood Microsystems, developer of the world's highest performance microfabricated valves and electro-fluidic integrated circuits. While working in Cal Quate's group at Stanford, he invented the microfabricated cantilever beam, an important component enabling atomic force microscopy.
